6.2% of 18,920 ads became winners.

Every dot on this screen is one Meta ad we ran. We graded all of them against the leads they brought in. Here is what the winners had in common, and how to find out where yours stand.

Every owner has run an ad they were sure about that did nothing.

That is normal, and the data shows why. We pulled every Meta ad Sneeze It has run for gyms, studios, med spas, salons, wellness clinics and franchise brands: 18,920 ads, $3.95 million in spend, 121,333 leads. Then we asked which ads did the work.

Three patterns stand out.

Most ads barely run. Two out of three ads spent less than $100 in their whole life. Only 6.2% became winners. A low hit rate is how Meta advertising works, not a sign your ads are bad.

Meta's favorite ad is often not your best ad. Of the 1,175 ads Meta put the most money behind, fewer than half brought in leads cheaper than their account's average. Spend tells you what Meta likes. Leads tell you what works.

The popular formats are not the cheap ones. Headline-only designs are one of the most common ads we see, and they cost 83% more per lead than before-and-after ads. Phone-shot UGC became a winner twice as often as polished production.

Cost per lead by kind of ad. Magenta types beat the average by 10% or more.
Part 1 · The search for winners

Most ads never get a real chance

Meta decides which of your ads get the money, and it decides fast. Most ads get a few dollars and stop. A small number take off and carry the account.

Lifetime spend per ad

All 18,920 ads, grouped by how much each one spent in its whole life. Two out of three never passed $100.

What counts as a winnerAn ad that spent at least ten times what its account's typical ad spent, and at least $500. It is a strict bar on purpose: it finds the ads that truly took off, not the ones that ran a little longer.
6.2%

of ads became winners. 1,175 ads out of 18,920.

49%

of all the money went to those winners. When an ad takes off, Meta backs it hard.

42%

of a typical account's spend went to its top 6% of ads.

So the job is not to predict which ad will win. Nobody can do that reliably. The job is to find winners fast, understand why they worked, and make more like them.

Part 2 · Meta's pick versus your pick

Half the ads Meta loves cost you more

Meta spends where it sees engagement. That is not always where your leads come from. When we checked every winner against its own account's average cost per lead, the split was close to a coin flip.

47 in 100

winning ads brought in leads cheaper than their account's average. These are the ones to copy.

53 in 100

took the budget and brought leads at or above average, or none at all. Meta liked them. Your front desk did not.

This is why, once your account is connected, we grade every ad twice: once on how much Meta backed it, and again on what a lead from it actually cost. An ad has to pass both before we call it a winner or tell you to make more like it.

Part 3 · The volume effect

More new ads, more winners

If winners are rare, the way to find more of them is to give Meta more new ideas to choose from. The accounts that launched more new ads each week found more winners each month.

Winners found per month, by how often an account launched new ads

Median across 97 accounts that brought in at least 50 leads. Bigger budgets tend to launch more ads. The pattern still shows up, more weakly, among accounts with similar budgets.

An account launching four or more new ads a week found a winner roughly every month. One launching less than one a week waited almost three months. The typical account in our data launched 1.6 new ads a week.

Part 4 · What winning ads look like

What a lead costs, by the kind of ad

Our Creative Direction tool labels every ad three ways: how it looks, how it opens, and how it was made. Then it lines each label up against the leads it produced. Toggle between the three.
